Container Spreader FAQs

Content for Kinocranes container handling equipment

Q: What is a container spreader and how does it work?

A: A container spreader is a lifting attachment used to handle standardized shipping containers with a crane, gantry crane, bridge crane, stacker, or other compatible lifting equipment. It connects to the container's corner fittings through four or eight locking heads. Once the lifting points are correctly aligned, the locking system secures the container for lifting and can release it after unloading, depending on the selected spreader design.

Kinocranes supplies container spreader solutions with electric, hydraulic, semi-automatic, and mechanical configurations. The final design should be selected according to the container size, lifting equipment, duty cycle, and operating environment.

Q: What types of containers can a container lifting spreader handle?

A: A container lifting spreader can be configured for 20 ft, 40 ft, or 45 ft standard containers. A fixed spreader is generally selected when the operation handles one main container size, while a telescopic spreader can adjust between different supported lengths.

Kinocranes also offers twin-lift container spreader solutions that can lift two 20 ft containers together or handle 20 ft, 40 ft, and 45 ft containers independently, depending on the model and operating requirements. The container dimensions and lifting mode should be confirmed before quotation.

Q: What is a semi-automatic container spreader and when should it be used?

A: A semi-automatic container spreader is a lifting device that reduces the amount of manual work needed to connect and release a container during handling. It is suitable for operations that require a practical container lifting solution without the full control system of an automatic electric or hydraulic spreader.

A semi-automatic fixed spreader can be considered for yards, logistics facilities, factories, and other applications that mainly handle a consistent container size. The correct choice depends on the available crane or handling equipment, container specification, lifting frequency, and required operator involvement.

Q: What is the difference between a fixed and telescopic container spreader?

A: A fixed container spreader has a set lifting span and is normally used when the operation handles one specified container length. It offers a straightforward configuration for dedicated 20 ft or 40 ft container handling applications.

A telescopic container spreader uses an adjustable frame to support more than one container length. Kinocranes electric telescopic rotation spreader solutions can be designed for 20 ft, 40 ft, and 45 ft container handling, subject to the final model configuration. A fixed spreader may be more suitable for a single-size workflow, while a telescopic spreader provides greater flexibility when container sizes vary.

Q: How does a container spreader twist lock secure the container?

A: A container spreader twist lock, also called a locking head, engages with the corner fitting of the container. When the spreader is correctly positioned, the locking heads connect with the corner fittings and the self-locking system helps keep the lifting connection stable during handling.

The spreader should not be lifted until the locking status, alignment, limit position, and surrounding working area have been checked by the operator. The exact twist lock arrangement and operating method depend on the selected spreader model and its control system.

Q: Can a container crane spreader be used with cranes and forklifts?

A: Yes. A container crane spreader can be designed to work with compatible quay cranes, gantry cranes, portal cranes, bridge cranes, stackers, and other container handling equipment. Kinocranes also offers an empty container handler for forklift applications, intended for transporting, stacking, and loading or unloading empty 20 ft or 40 ft containers.

Compatibility depends on the lifting interface, rated capacity, control connection, working height, container type, and operating conditions. For this reason, the spreader should be matched with the specific crane or forklift model before purchase.

Q: What is the difference between a container spreader bar and a spreader beam?

A: A container spreader bar or spreader beam is a lifting frame used to distribute the load and maintain a controlled lifting geometry. Depending on its design, it may connect to the load with hooks, slings, or other lifting points.

A dedicated container spreader is designed specifically for container corner fittings and normally includes locking heads for direct engagement with the container. A spreader bar or beam may be a suitable option for certain cargo handling tasks, but it is not automatically interchangeable with a container spreader. The lifting method, connection points, load distribution, and required safety devices must be reviewed before use.

Q: What is a container spreader used for in port and yard operations?

A: A container spreader is used to lift, move, load, unload, and position standardized containers in ports, railway freight yards, storage yards, logistics parks, and factory facilities. It helps connect the lifting equipment to the container corner fittings and supports a more controlled handling process.

Different applications may require different spreader configurations. Port and high-throughput operations may consider electric, hydraulic, telescopic, rotating, or twin-lift solutions, while a smaller yard may prefer a fixed or semi-automatic design. Selection should be based on container sizes, lifting frequency, equipment type, available space, and local working conditions.

Q: Can a container spreader handle overheight containers?

A: Kinocranes offers an overheight frame container spreader for applications that require a frame arrangement around or above the container. This type of solution can be considered when the cargo or handling process requires additional clearance compared with a standard container spreader.

The suitable frame dimensions, connection arrangement, lifting capacity, and operating limits depend on the overheight cargo and the supporting lifting equipment. The overheight container dimensions and site conditions should therefore be provided for a customized design review before quotation.

Q: What container spreader parts require inspection and maintenance?

A: Key container spreader parts should be inspected according to the final model, operating frequency, and manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Typical inspection points include the locking heads or twist locks, self-locking mechanism, limit-position devices, overload protection, emergency-stop system, electrical or hydraulic components, structural welds, and visible signs of corrosion or damage.

Before each operation, the operator should check the spreader for abnormal deformation, loose connections, damaged locking components, leaks, or control faults. Periodic maintenance should follow the equipment manual and site safety procedures. Spare parts and service requirements should be confirmed with the supplier using the exact spreader model and serial information.
