Scrap Lifting Electromagnet
Rated voltage: DC 220 V
Round:General ferrous scrap, turnings, steel balls and casting ingots
Oval:Scrap loading and unloading in narrow wagon or container sections
Available duty:Normal-temperature, high-temperature, high-frequency and strong-magnetic variants
A scrap lifting electromagnet is a DC lifting attachment for handling ferrous scrap with an overhead crane, gantry crane, or material-handling system. The MW5 round series is suited to general loose scrap, turnings, steel balls and casting ingots. The MW61 oval series is configured for narrow spaces such as railway wagons and container-like scrap compartments.
Selection must be based on the scrap category, bulk condition, material temperature, required duty cycle and available power supply. A magnet sized only by nominal lifting capacity can produce an unsuitable result when the scrap contains long turnings, thin plate, mixed sections, residual gaps or elevated-temperature material.

The round MW5 scrap handling magnet provides a broad working face for dispersed ferrous material. Its size range allows the magnet diameter to be matched to crane capacity, grab area and scrap flow. The MW61 oval magnet uses an elongated magnetic face where a circular lifting magnet cannot adequately cover the loading area.
Technical Features
DC magnetic circuit for ferrous scrap handling
The MW5 and MW61 use DC magnet systems. For the MW5 normal-temperature, high-temperature and high-frequency tables, the listed rated voltage is DC 220 V. The electrical connection, cable length and control enclosure should be confirmed against the crane arrangement and operating route.
Variant selection by thermal and duty condition
- Normal-temperature type: for scrap handled within the temperature range accepted by the selected standard configuration.
- High-temperature type: listed for material environments up to 700 C ; final application confirmation is required when scrap temperature, heat exposure and cycle conditions overlap.
- High-frequency type: listed with TD = 75% duty cycle for higher operating frequency.
- Strong-magnetic type: intended where greater attraction is required for conditions such as furnace charging or lighter, more difficult scrap fractions; final capacity must be confirmed against the actual material sample and process.
Geometry matched to the handling zone
Diameter, overall height, lifting lug geometry and cable routing affect hook clearance, crane headroom and collision risk. For MW61 oval models, the length and width of the loading compartment must be provided before magnetic-face dimensions are selected.

MW61 Oval Scrap Lifting Electromagnet
The MW61 series is an oval lifting electromagnet for scrap transfer in restricted-width loading zones. Its elongated profile is intended to improve coverage in narrow rail wagons or similarly shaped compartments. The magnetic circuit, dimensions and capacity should be determined from the usable loading area and the actual scrap composition.

Engineering note: Magnet lifting capacity is affected by scrap shape, thickness, bulk density, temperature, air gap, pile condition and energizing time. Use the table for preliminary selection only. The final scrap lifting electromagnet model should be verified against representative material and the crane duty condition.
Typical Operating Areas
- Scrap yards handling loose ferrous scrap before sorting, loading or transfer.
- Steelworks charging lines handling suitable ferrous fractions.
- Foundry material areas moving steel balls, casting ingots or return scrap.
- Railway wagon and narrow-container unloading with an MW61 oval scrap handling magnet.
- Crane systems requiring repeatable electromagnetic pick-and-release handling rather than mechanical gripping.

Information Required for Model Selection
Provide the following data to select a lifting electromagnet for steel scrap accurately:
- Primary material: loose mixed scrap, turnings, steel balls, casting ingots, plate offcuts or another ferrous fraction.
- Required lifting quantity per cycle and the required material throughput.
- Scrap temperature at the magnet contact point.
- Crane type, available hook load, hoisting height and working area.
- Power supply and required duty cycle.
- Loading-zone dimensions, particularly for an MW61 oval magnet.
- Existing magnet controller, battery back-up requirement or crane electrical interface, where applicable.
FAQ
What materials can a scrap lifting electromagnet handle?
It is intended for ferromagnetic materials. The supplied MW5 data lists steel balls, casting ingots and turnings as separate reference materials. Mixed scrap must be assessed by its actual shape, thickness and bulk condition rather than treated as one material class.
How should I read the cold/hot capacity values?
They are separate reference capacities shown for cold and hot conditions in the supplied data. The lower value should not be assumed to apply to every hot-scrap process. Actual material temperature, exposure duration and duty cycle must be reviewed for the selected configuration.
Is a high-temperature scrap lifting electromagnet required for all hot material?
No. The material temperature and the magnet's heat exposure must be defined first. The supplied MW5 high-temperature table states a temperature limit of up to 700 C. Final suitability depends on the complete operating condition.
What is the difference between MW5 and MW61 magnets?
MW5 is a round magnet series for general scrap handling. MW61 uses an oval magnetic face for narrow wagon or container sections where a round footprint is less effective.
Can the published lifting capacity be used as the crane safe working load?
No. Magnet capacity is material-specific and affected by operating conditions. Crane capacity, hook block, suspension components, electrical system and handling procedure must each be checked separately.
What duty cycle is available?
The supplied MW5 normal-temperature and high-temperature tables are listed at TD = 60%. The supplied MW5 high-frequency table is listed at TD = 75%. Confirm the required operating cycle before selecting a model.
What information is needed for a quotation or technical proposal?
Provide scrap photographs or representative material details, material temperature, target lift per cycle, crane data, operating frequency, power supply and loading-area dimensions. This information is required to establish the magnetic circuit and model configuration.
Request a Technical Selection
For a technically grounded proposal, submit the scrap category, operating temperature, lift target, crane details, duty cycle and loading-zone dimensions. A suitable model can then be matched to the actual handling condition rather than to a nominal capacity alone.
